IP65 is a rating used to define the degree of protection provided by electrical enclosures against the intrusion of solid objects and liquids. The IP (Ingress Protection) rating is standardized by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under the IEC 60529 standard. The IP rating consists of two digits, each signifying a specific level of protection.

Here’s a breakdown of what IP65 means:

First Digit (6): Protection against solid objects
The first digit indicates the level of protection against solid objects and dust.
A rating of 6 means the enclosure is completely dust-tight. There is no ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight).

Second Digit (5): Protection against liquids
The second digit indicates the level of protection against water ingress.
A rating of 5 means the enclosure is protected against water jets. Specifically, water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.

An IP65 rating means the device is completely protected from dust and can withstand low-pressure water jets from any direction. This makes it suitable for use in environments where dust and moisture are present, ensuring the device’s durability and functionality under such conditions.
